Dallas Mayor Boyd Austin, Jr.'s vision became a reality with the renovation of the
downtown Theater. The complete restoration of the existing 8,900sf structure as
well as a 2800sf two-story addition, is the crown jewel in the city’s downtown revitalization
project.
The building’s interior was totally destroyed by fire, remaining closed for more
than 35 years. Thanks to a complete steel support and framing design/build and new
roof, the existing structure has been brought back to life. High-end finishes throughout
include epoxy terrazzo, nickel-plated silver handrails, marble vanity countertops
and a new 570-seat fabric auditorium seating package. A state-of-the-art audio/visual
system includes a 23-foot wide X 13-foot high projection screen for movie viewing,
while the new stage features a 35-foot wide custom made curtain and theatrical lighting
which enables local talent, schools and organizations to use the facility for live
performances.
The 2,800sf addition houses two theatrical dressing rooms, a fully functional basement,
and new HVAC, electrical and A/V equipment. The original marquee has been restored,
and hangs alongside a new EIFS exterior, allowing the old Theater to integrate with
a contemporary, sleek appearance. In addition to the Theater, another existing building
located on Main St. was renovated into the new Dallas Police Headquarters/Arts/City
Court building. Complete interior renovations to the 3,600sf building included new
flooring, new office space, cabinetry, lobby, bathrooms and conference room.
