Originally built in 1912, the John Saylor Coon Building is the second oldest structure
on the Georgia Tech campus, and part of the 12-building area listed on the National
Register of Historic Places as the Georgia Institute of Technology Historic District.
Renovation of the existing 66,000sf building includes 62 faculty offices, 17 conferences/seminar
rooms complete with the infrastructure to support future audio/visual capabilities,
and 87 laboratory/testing rooms with special sound transmission reducing partitions
and sound control access doors. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection
systems were installed as well. Connected to the original building, a new 4-story,
12,000sf addition was constructed to house mechanical space to support the new upgraded
facility, along with additional public restrooms and means of egress. Work on the
addition included exterior skin and interior build-out.
